Quick Tip: Free Up Time To Tackle Your Overwhelm

This video-blog is the second in a 4-part series of short videos about how therapists in private practice can reduce their sense of overwhelm.

This video addresses how therapist can free up time to tackle the things contributing to their overwhelm.

Did you miss part one in the series? The first video addressed how taking inventory can help therapists identify where to begin as they work through their overwhelm. Check it out here.

Free Up Time To Reduce Your Overwhelm

Once you know the things that you want to work on in order to reduce your overwhelm, the next step is to actually find the time to do so!

The number one complaint that I hear from overwhelmed therapists is that they don’t have enough time to do all the things they want to do.

Tips for freeing up time:

  • Prioritize your tasks. Focus on one thing at a time. If you haven’t already done so, go back and take inventory of the state of your practice and your goals, so you can identify the “right” priorities for yourself.

  • Map out how much time you need to complete the task that is your priority. Do the math to come up with your best estimate of how much time you really need. For example, if you have a backlog of 25 session notes you want to work through and each session note takes you 5 minutes to write then you need to find 125 minutes (25 x 5) or just over 2 hours to catch up on this task.

  • Block off the time you need on your schedule. It is essential to put the time on your calendar and commit to making this time a priority so that you can reduce your overwhelm.

  • If you aren’t finding any “blank” spots on your calendar to work on your priorities, I suggest looking for opportunities to ask for extra support and help from others. Are there tasks you can delegate at home or the office in order to free up more time?

  • Identify and eliminate unnecessary distractions (social media, time wasted on tasks that aren’t in alignment with your goals, etc).
